Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships 2025 for Teacher Training Students (Fully Funded to Japan)
Applications are now open for the 2025 Japanese Government Teacher Training Scholarships. Offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), this program provides opportunities for international teachers to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities as Teacher Training Students.
Requirements
- Nationality: Applicants must hold citizenship in a country with diplomatic relations with Japan.
- Age: Applicants should be born on or after April 2, 1990.
- Academic and Career Background: Applicants must have graduated from a university or teacher training school and have at least five years of teaching experience at primary/secondary schools or teacher training institutions (excluding universities) as of October 1, 2025.
- Japanese Language Ability: Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese.
- Health: A health certificate in the prescribed format, signed by a physician, is required to confirm the applicant has no physical or mental conditions that would prevent them from studying in Japan.

Scholarship Period
The scholarship covers the duration required to complete the training course at the designated university, typically from October 2025 (or the course’s starting month) to March 2027. Although recipients may arrive in Japan as early as September 2025, the scholarship benefits will officially begin in October 2025. The scholarship period cannot be extended.
Scholarship Benefits
Monthly Allowance
- Recipients will receive 143,000 yen per month after arriving in Japan.
- An additional regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen per month is provided for those studying or conducting research in designated regions.
- Note: The payment amount may vary each fiscal year based on the Japanese Government’s budget. The scholarship will be suspended if a grantee is absent from the university for an extended period.
Education Fees
- Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities are waived.
Travel Expenses
- Transportation to Japan: MEXT provides an economy-class airline ticket from the international airport nearest the recipient’s residence (in principle, within the country of nationality) to an international airport in Japan closest to the accepting university.
- Transportation from Japan: Upon application, MEXT covers the cost of an economy-class airline ticket for recipients completing their training course, allowing them to return to their home country by the end of the scholarship period.
